彼時, 我 koh 拄著另外一个厝邊. 這人厝邊 lóng 講伊靠查某食飯. M̄-koh 我若問伊做啥, 伊講伊是 "倉庫守衛." 一般講來, 伊無啥人緣, m̄-koh 伊常在 kap 我講話, 有時來阮兜坐一下, 因為我肯聽伊講話. 我 mā 感覺伊講 ê 真趣味. 又 koh, 我 mā 無啥理由無愛 kap 伊講話. 伊號做 Raymond Sintès; 伊 ê 人矮, 肩頭闊, 鼻仔扁扁, ná 像拳頭 sai-hū. 伊總是穿 kah 真 phāⁿ. 一改, 講著 Salamano, 伊 kā 我講, "He 敢毋是真僥倖!" 伊問我講, 我敢袂討厭 che, 我講袂 lah.

阮同齊上樓, 得欲分開 ê 時, 伊講:

"我遐有寡血腸 kap 酒. 做伙來, 好無?"

我想, án-ne 我 tō 毋免家己煮食, tō 接受伊 ê 邀請.

伊 mā 是干焦有一个房間 kap 一个無窗仔 ê 小灶跤. 伊 ê 眠床邊囥一个粉紅 chhap 白 ê 石膏天使, 幾張仔運動明星 ê 相片, kap 兩三張露體查某 ê 寫真. 房間垃圾, 眠床亂操操. 伊先點 to̍h 油燈, koh 來伊 ùi lak 袋仔扭出一虯 a-cha ê hô-tái, kā tān tī 伊 ê 正手. 我問伊手是按怎. 伊講, 伊和欲揣伊麻煩 ê 某乜人相拍.

"Meursault /mur.só/ 先生, 你知 lah," 伊講, "我毋是歹人, 只是火氣較大. 彼人對我講, ‘你若是查埔囝, 你 tō 落電車來.’ 我 kā 講, ‘Ai-ah, 莫惹事 lah.’ 伊煞講, ‘你無膽 lah.’ 自 án-ne, 我落車, 對伊講, ‘我 kā 你講, 你上好到遮為止, 若無我 tō 教示你.’ 伊 koh 講, ‘你 káⁿ 按怎?’ 我 tō kā 拍. 伊跋倒. 我得欲幫伊搝起來, 伊煞 ùi 塗跤 kā 我踢. 我 mā 用跤頭趺 kā 挵, koh kā 舂幾 ā 下. 伊 ê 面 chiâu 是血. 我問伊 án-ne 有夠無. 伊講, ‘有.’"

伊 ná 講 ná tān hô͘-tái. 我坐 tī 伊 ê 眠床.

伊講, "Án-ne 你知, 毋是惹代誌. 伊是家己揣 ê." Án-ne 無毋著, 我表示同意.

Koh 來, 伊 kā 我講, 伊事實是欲問我對這項代誌 ê 意見, 因為我是一个查埔囝, bat 代誌, 我會當幫贊伊, án-ne 咱 tō 是好朋友.

我恬恬, 伊 tō koh 問, 我欲 kap 伊做朋友無. 我講, 我無問題: 伊 tō ká-ná 真歡喜. 伊提出血腸, kā 煎好, koh 排好玻璃杯, 餐盤, 刀仔 kap 攕仔, koh 有兩矸 pô-tô 酒. Lóng 靜靜無聲. Koh 來, 阮坐落來.

阮 teh 食 ê 時, 伊開始 kā 我講伊 ê 故事. 拄開始, 伊小可 tiû-tû 一下.

"我 bat 一个查某 ... 老實講, 她是我 ê 搭頭." Kap 伊相拍彼个人 tō 是這个查某 ê 兄弟. 伊講, 伊已經 teh 包飼她 ah.

M̄-koh 她一直 kā 我講, 手頭真絚, 我供應 ê 無夠她生活. Iah 我 tō kā 她講, ‘那毋去揣一个做半日 ê khang-khòe? 你小可加趁 ê, 對我真有幫贊. 我這個月才拄拄買一領外套予你, 我逐工予你 20 franc, 我 koh 納你 ê 房租, iah 你敢有做啥? ... 下晡時你和朋友去啉 kapi. 你甚至替姻付 kapi kap 糖 ê 錢. Iah 我 neh, he 錢是我予你 ê. 我一直對你真好, iah 你煞 án-ne 對待我.’ M̄-koh 她猶是毋願揣頭路; 她干焦一直 kā 我講, 她 ê 收入無夠開銷. -- tō 是 án-ne, 我知影她 teh 欺騙我."

伊 koh 講, 伊發現她 ê 皮包 ni̍h 有一張彩票, 她 koh 無法度講 he 是按怎來 ê. 後來, 伊又 koh tī 她 ê 房間看著 Mont-de-Piété 當店 ê 當票, 才知她去當兩跤手環. He 以前, 伊根本毋知她有 hiah-ê 手環.

"真清楚, 她是 teh 欺騙我. 自 án-ne 我無愛她 ah. M̄-koh 我先 kā 她修理, koh kā 她講出我對她 ê 看法. 我 kā 講, 她干焦興欲上眠床. 你看, Meursault Ss, che 袂輸我 kā 講: "你毋知逐个 lóng teh 欣羨你綴我有偌好. 一工你 tō 會知今 ê 好.’"

伊 kā 修理 kah 她流血. 以前伊 m̄-bat 拍她. "我 bat 小可 kā 拍, 會使講 lóng 輕輕仔. 她若喝咻. 我 tō 關窗仔簾, 自 án-ne mā 無 koh kā 拍. M̄-koh 這改正經 kā 拍 kah 真忝. 若欲老實講, 她猶予我拍無夠 leh."

Just then my other neighbor carne in. The word around the neighborhood is that he lives off women. But when you ask him what he does, he's a "warehouse guard." Generally speaking, he's not very popular. But he often talks to me and sometimes stops by my place for a minute, because I listen to him. I find what he.has to say interesting. Besides, I don't have any reason not to talk to him. His name is Raymond Sintes. He's a little on the short side, with broad shoulders and a nose like a boxer's. He always dresses very sharp. And once he said to me, talking about Salarnano, "If that isn't pitiful!" He asked me didn't I think it was disgusting and I said no.

We went upstairs and I was about to leave him when he said, "I've got some blood sausage and some wine at my place. How about joining me?" I figured it would save me the trouble of having to cook for myself, so I accepted. He has only one room too, and a little kitchen with no window. Over his bed he has a pink-and-white plaster angel, some pictures of famous athletes, and two or three photographs of naked women. The room was dirty and the bed was unmade. First he lit his paraffin lamp, then he took a pretty dubious-looking bandage out of his pocket and wrapped it around his right hand. I asked him what he'd done to it. He said he'd been in a fight with some guy who was trying to start trouble.

"You see, Monsieur Meursault," he said, "it's not that I'm a bad guy, butl have a short fuse. This guy says to me, 'If you're man enough you'll get down off that streetcar.' I said, 'C'mon, take it easy.' Then he said, 'You're yellow.' So I got off and I said to him, 'I think you better stop right there or I'm gonna have to teach you a lesson.' And he said, 'You and who else?' So I let him have it. He went down. I was about to help him up but he started kicking me from there on the ground. So I kneed him one and slugged him a couple of times. His face was all bloody. I asked him if he'd had enough. He said, 'Yes.' " All this time, Sintes was fiddling with his bandage. I was sitting on the bed. He said, "So you see, I wasn't the one who started it. He was asking for it." It was true and I agreed. Then he told me that as a matter of fact he wanted to ask my advice about the whole business, because I was a man, I knew about things, I could help him out, and then we'd be pals. I didn't say anything, and he asked me again if I wanted to be pals. I said it was fine with me: he seemed pleased. He got out the blood sausage, fried it up, and set out glasses, plates, knives and forks, and two bottles of wine. All this in silence. Then we sat down. As we ate, he started telling me his story. He was a little hesitant at first. "I knew this lady . . . as a matter of fact, well, she was my mistress." The man he'd had the fight with was this woman's brother. He told me he'd been keeping her. I didn't say anything, and yet right away he added that he knew what people around the neighborhood were saying, but that his conscience was clear and that he was a warehouse guard.

"To get back to what I was saying," he continued, "I realized that she was cheating on me." He'd been giving her just enough to live on. He paid the rent on her room and gave her twenty francs a day for food. "Three hundred francs for the room, six hundred for food, a pair of stockings every now and then-that made it a thousand francs. And Her Highness refused to work. But she was always telling me that things were too tight, that she couldn't get by on what I was giving her. And I'd say to her, 'Why not work half-days? You'd be helping me out on all the little extras. I bought you a new outfit just this month, I give you twenty francs a day, I pay your rent, and what do you do? . . . You have coffee in the afternoons with your friends. You even provide the coffee and sugar. And me, I provide the money. I've been good to you, and this is how you repay me.' But she wouldn't work; she just kept on telling me she couldn't make ends meet-and that's what made me realize she was cheating on me."

Then he told me that he'd found a lottery ticket in her purse and she hadn't been able to explain how she paid for it. A short time later he'd found a ticket from the shop in Mont-de-Piete in her room which proved that she'd pawned two bracelets. Until then he hadn't even known the bracelets existed. "It was clear that she was cheating on me. So I left her. But first I smacked her around. And then I told her exactly what I thought of her. I told her that all she was interested in was getting into the sack. You see, Monsieur Meursault, it's like I told her: 'You don't realize that everybody's jealous of how good you have it with me. Someday you'll know just how good it was.' "

He'd beaten her till she bled. He'd never beaten her before. ''I'd smack her around a little, but nice-like, you might say. She'd scream a little. I'd close the shutters and it always ended the same way. But this time it's for real. And if you ask me, she still hasn't gotten what she has corning."
